Welcome to the April 2025 edition of “Last Month at Council”! We had some exciting things happen last month, including passing the 2025 Financial Plan.
Let’s get into it!
April 1st, 2025, Council Meeting
- Council passed Conditional Use C5-25, which allows for a strip mall to be developed at 300 Drovers Run.
- Council passed Conditional Use C6-25, which allows for a wholesale meat distributor to set up in the business park at Unit 7 – 735 Schultz Ave.
- Council placed the condition that the property owner or Condo Corp ensure they have approval in writing from the Town for a revised parking plan that addresses the parking required for this type of use.
- The Town awarded, after following its due tendering process, the contract for the Town’s 2025 Gravel & Topsoil Program.
- The contract was awarded to Barkman’s Cartage Ltd., which submitted the overall highest scoring bid.
April 15th, 2025 Council Meeting
- Council passed Variance V4-25, which varied the required setback from 25 feet to no less than 6.45 feet, to accommodate an existing building at 268 Main Street.
- What is a Variance? A variance order is when a property owner applies for a provision for their property to allow it to “vary” from the zoning bylaw. This is usually done to allow for smaller setbacks from a property line, and is often allowed only when the variance still shows a desire to adhere to the spirit of the bylaw.
- Council held a public hearing for the Town’s 2025 Financial Plan, and then proceeded to hold second and third readings, passing the Plan.
- Some Plan highlights:
- A tax increase of 4%, which for a house assessed at $399,800, is an average increase of $86.29 for the municipal portion of property taxes.
- Waste collection costs are $150 per household, an increase of $10.
- Departmental Budgets:
- General Gov. Services: Down by 1.15%
- Protective: up by 13.35%
