Four of these samples were collected in Winnipeg and one each in Boissevain, Russell and Stonewall. So far this year, a total of 11 positive mosquito samples have been found. Based on the current level of infected mosquitoes in these communities, adult mosquito control is not being recommended at this time.
The number of adult Culex tarsalis mosquitoes trapped during the week of Aug. 1 decreased slightly compared to the previous week. Preliminary numbers for the week of Aug. 8 also show a slight decrease.
Numbers of trapped Culex tarsalis mosquitoes still remain relatively high overall, but the proportion of trapped mosquitoes that have tested positive for West Nile virus is relatively low compared to previous years.
With the increased number of infected mosquitoes and the high number of Culex tarsalis overall, the risk of human exposure to West Nile virus is estimated to have increased slightly over last week. In previous years, the peak risk period for human exposure to West Nile virus has been the last two weeks of July and the first three weeks of August.
To date, no human cases of West Nile virus have been identified in Manitoba in the 2010 season.
Manitobans are reminded to protect themselves and others by taking the following actions to reduce the risk of mosquito
bites:
· reducing the amount of time spent outdoors during peak mosquito hours between dusk and dawn;
· using appropriate mosquito repellent;
· wearing light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing; and
· maintaining door and window screens so they fit tightly and are free of holes.
Manitobans can reduce the number of mosquitoes around their homes by reducing standing water.
To prevent the development of Culex tarsalis mosquitoes, homeowners can:
· clean eavestroughs and regularly empty bird baths and other items that might collect water;
· ensure rain barrels are covered with mosquito screening or are tightly sealed around the downspout;
· clear yards of old tires or other items that collect water; and
· improve landscaping to prevent standing water around the home.
Information on the risk of West Nile virus will continue to be provided to the public throughout the summer in a media campaign and at various fairs and festivals. Manitobans can also check the West Nile virus website regularly for up-to-date data and information.

News Release - West Nile Virus Update-2010-07-09 08:31:59 July 8, 2010
WEST NILE VIRUS UPDATE #4
Manitoba Health reports the analysis of the adult mosquitoes trapped for the week of June 27 found increased numbers of Culex tarsalis mosquitoes throughout southern Manitoba. None of the mosquitoes collected to date have tested positive for the West Nile virus. Preliminary trap information for the week of July 4 indicates the numbers of Culex tarsalis mosquitoes are continuing to increase throughout southern Manitoba, with some communities showing large increases in numbers.
Culex tarsalis mosquitoes are the mosquitoes most likely to carry the West Nile virus. It is possible there are some infected Culex tarsalis mosquitoes in southern Manitoba at this time. The risk of exposure to West Nile virus is increasing with the rising numbers of Culex tarsalis mosquitoes and the continued hot weather. The risk of being bitten by a mosquito carrying West Nile virus is expected to continue to increase in the coming weeks. Reducing standing water around the home can help prevent the Culex tarsalis mosquitoes from developing.
The proportion of Culex tarsalis mosquitoes collected in the traps is increasing, however, nuisance mosquitoes, which do not carry the virus, continue to make up most of the weekly trap catches. Weekly average trap counts of Culex tarsalis by regional health authority are available on the province's West Nile virus website at www.gov.mb.ca/health/wnv.
The province offers a cost-shared larviciding program for municipalities and communities to take steps to help control Culex tarsalis mosquitoes. Under the program, 75 per cent of costs are covered by the province and 25 per cent are covered by the participating community. To date this year, 55 communities are participating in the program.
Information on the risk of West Nile virus will continue to be provided to the public throughout the summer in a media campaign and at various fairs and festivals. Manitobans can also check the West Nile virus website regularly for up-to-date data and information.

...Back to top... Mosquito Fogging Policy-2010-07-07 22:37:11 Council reviewed its mosquito control policies during the Tuesday regular meeting of council. While it was recognized that there is a larger than average nuisance mosquito population this year, the culex mosquito identified with the West Nile virus threat has not shown up in the traps. Public feedback was considered, both those for fogging and those against. Council has decided to remain with their policy of not spraying unless directed by provincial officials and then for mitigation of the West Nile threat only. The chemicals used in spraying are both expensive and possibly linked to a number of health concerns and additionally the effectiveness of street based spraying is hindered by large backyards and the surrounding rural lands. Larviciding programs will continue to reduce hatch numbers. Information on the provincial guidelines can be found on the Province of Manitoba website at www.gov.mb.ca. ...Back to top...
